Buying a new phone

When I buy a phone, do I have to activate it? Also, will I be locked into a year of monthly payments? Or is it pay as you go? I understand I won’t be able to switch carriers more than likely, but am I locked into a specific contract? Thanks in advance!

Hi, Celizzle. Our phones are network locked. Boost Mobile will assist with unlocking a device under the following circumstances:
The device is SIM unlock capable
The device has not been reported as lost or stolen or otherwise flagged as ineligible to be unlocked
The device has been active on the associated account for at least 12 months
The associated account is active and in good standing.

What I’m asking is, when I buy a phone do I have to get it activated? In the description of the IPhone 7 it said “Data plan required”. I’m wondering what that entails.
