"Your phone number is not eligible for porting" message received. Current Virgin Mobile user.

I have a new unlocked phone and am looking to switch from Virgin Mobile. I want to keep my number but received a message stating "your phone number is not eligible for porting." It's my understanding this is a common issue but I had no luck navigating the customer service line to speak to someone without an account number.
